Work Your Network: Business Milestones
Canada isn’t the only one celebrating a milestone birthday in 2017. This year, the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce is celebrating 160 years of serving the Ottawa business community, and many Chamber members have special milestones of their own.
Did you know?
- The Ottawa Chamber of Commerce was originally called the Ottawa Board of Trade. It began with 50 members, headed by J.B. Lewis—the second mayor of Bytown, the first mayor of Ottawa, and a Member of Parliament from 1872 to 1873.
- The Board had authority to arbitrate business and financial disputes. It could swear witnesses, hear evidence, and make binding decisions. As the organization evolved, the Ottawa Junior Board held its first meeting in 1933 with 100 members. It surveyed Ottawa’s traffic and parking conditions, and the results were incorporated into the Traffic Act.
- 118 chairs have led the Chamber since its inception.
